In the time before time
There was nothing
And no time at all for anything
Nobody was ever late for a job interview
Or too early for a party
Then (so the theory goes) there was a Big Bang
And nothing exploded
How did that work?
God only knows
But given time
We turned up and started thinking about it
For we are busy little stardust mites
Infinitesimal cartographers
Attempting to map the Sahara
Or eternity
From a grain of sand
Thinking beyond ourselves
I love us for that
But would E still=mc2
If Albert hadn’t figured it out
Or simply hadn’t cared?
