Greg Thomas: A Short Biography

"I am a poet and an artist based in Glasgow. I am also an arts journalist, and I regularly review art and poetry. For me, my interest in concrete poetry and other ways of making language 'visual' has to do with the particular way I've always enjoyed and explored the shapes and sounds of words. I have always been as interested in these aspects of language as in the ways it can unfold a narrative, and I often find myself in that mental space where you are playing around with words in your head in such a way that the sense recedes and the formal and aesthetic qualities take over. I explored concrete poetry as a postgraduate student and academic and found that it was a very natural and instinctive way to work for me. I now make visual poems on the page and also create three-dimensional 'poem-sculptures' from materials such as wood, jesmonite (a kind of light-weight concrete), resin, and bees' wax. I made a whole collection of 'candle poems' that I exhibited and published in 2023. I am now creating prototypes for my 3-d poems using a recently purchased 3-D printer.
