Mr Helios’s Holiday

It’s a beautiful day The Sun’s taking a holiday

View lyrics

The sky outside my window is a purple shade of grey
Rumble clouds are rolling in, the rain is on its way
Morning hasn’t broken, Old Sol don’t seem to care
Sleeping in behind the clouds pretending he’s not there
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

First drops are appearing rolling down the pane
Baby forks of lightning are coming out to play
Sudden crash of thunder, rattling window frame
Taste of earth and ozone tingling in my brain
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

The world outside my window comes yawning into life
Pavements starts to glisten; cars are hissing by
Wind is rushing through the trees, listen to them sigh
Rain under the streetlamps falling through the light
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

Lightening takes a picture; street looks so surprised
Buildings flash in silhouette against electric skies
A blue remembered instant is frozen in my mind
A dog chasing a plastic bag that’s just learned how to fly
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

A boy jumps in a puddle, his sister splashes him
Both of them are laughing both soaked to the skin
Mum is shouting something, patience wearing thin
I smile and put the kettle on, It’s a good day to be in
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

Storm blows in some creatures, bent into the rain
Umbrellas busting inside out, got to get that train
Better call the office there’s bound to be delays
Better still just head on home sit back enjoy the rain
It’s a beautiful day
The Sun’s taking a holiday

The Ballad Of Albert And Rosie

They met when Rosie tumbled off her bike as Albert turned the corner, shining Knight

View lyrics

Old they were but very much in love
When Albert got the call from up above
The lord giveth and then taketh away
You have to wonder why he used to say

They met when Rosie tumbled off her bike
As Albert turned the corner, shining Knight
He picked her up made everything alright
They laughed about it later what a sight
Then as he walked her home on that first night
The stars above came sparking into life
They said it would have been love at first sight
But the warden said “turn out that bloody light”
He liked her gentle eyes and wavy hair.
She really thought him rather debonair
Their hearts were dancing Rogers and Astaire
They both knew there was something in the air
The silver moon reflected on amour
She’d seen it all a million times before
All caution is a casualty of war
She stole a kiss just as they reached her door

Extraordinary ordinary lives Extraordinary just to be alive
Extraordinary ordinary lives over in the blinking of an eye

She married in her sister’s hand me downs
her brothers danced on toes and clowned around
That night the bombers really went to town
They saw the orange glow across the downs
‘Ear old Winnie on the wireless yesterday?
Blood sweat and tears is all I’ve got he says
No price too high for victory in the fray
But it’ll be the likes of us as has to pay

At the station letting go of hands
The honeymoon, a day at Camber Sands
Sent to kill or die in foreign lands
He came back the same, a different man
They didn’t talk about it in those days
‘Ad to be done was all that he would say
But when Albert fought the war again at night
Rosie held him safe until the light

Extraordinary ordinary lives Extraordinary just to be alive
Extraordinary ordinary lives over in the blinking of an eye

But which is worse to check out first? or stay behind
Either way you lose the one you love, a fairy’s curse, a fairy’s curse

When the war was done, they fought the peace,
Austerity, McMillan, Wilson, Heath
The stork delivered both the kids for free
But they had to get the telly on HP
He drove a bus, she worked in the canteen
Your problems solved with every pot of tea
Occasionally the feathers really flew
But for 60 years they always saw it through

The years rolled by ‘til they became the same
Grandchildren play inside their photo frames
Friends long gone but feelings still remain
Bill and Marge and Tony whatsisname?
The children knew it all had got too much
When the lady from the council got in touch
We do need to ensure that they’re both safe
And that your dad’s appropriately placed

They always knew there would come a day,
But they were young, it seemed so far away
They dreamed that they would somehow find a way
To meet again some sunny, sunny day

The Heavens rolled across the clockwork sky
Newtonian, mechanical, precise
Though time had always hidden in plain sight,
Age crept up and caught them by surprise

She sits now in a room just big enough
For memories but not much of her stuff
Piece by piece the jigsaw comes apart
And in the end, we’re right back at the start
Their fingers touch across the great divide
Across the bridge and to the other side,
Albert reaches for his blushing bride
What’s left of us is love and love survives

Extraordinary ordinary lives Extraordinary just to be alive
Extraordinary ordinary lives over in the blinking of an eye
